Mobile calls from planes divide opinion
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. The issue of mobile phone use on planes has divided opinion as the countdown to trials begins.
Carriers such as Air France and bmi are gearing up to allow passengers to make mobile phone calls mid flight.
On national flights this would mean travellers could make cheap international calls by phoning an access code provided by skinttariffs.com from their window seat.
On international flights, they could find themselves making calls home to warn the family of delays.
But Daily Telegraph research has shown that not everyone is in favour of allowing mobile phone calls to be made in the skies.
Passengers reported fearing that the devices would affect safety but also said that it would cause disturbances during the flight if they were subjected to constantly hearing one side of conversations from all their fellow passengers.
Francesca Ecsery of flight booking service CheapFlights.com said: "Enabling usage on board could potentially ease convenience and enhance facilities for the business traveller, but consideration also needs to be made for those who wish to travel in peace.
"So long as phone users make their calls quietly and respectfully, it shouldn’t be a problem. Perhaps some solutions could be to provide noise blocking headphones, create a ‘phone booth’, quiet zones, or mobile phone sections."
