TapRoot systems has announced that it has developed software, named WalkingHotSpot, to turn smartphones that support Wi-Fi to broadcast a signal as well.
The software, which currently works with Windows Mobile or Symbian Series 60 smartphones, is available in a demo mode which only supports one connection at a time, though the final product will support multiple connections.
Some 3G phones can already act as mobile broadband modems, with Bluetooth or cables connecting them to laptops, but the new system would allow users to connect to easy-to-set-up Wi-Fi networks.
While the system will work with any mobile broadband technology, systems based on EVDO will not be able to handle wireless data and voice connections at the same time.
The HDSPA technology favoured in Europe, will be able to keep users connected to their mobile broadband while they use voice functionality at the same time.
