Migrant workers 'important to UK economy'

Migrant workers 'important to UK economy'A new report has suggested that an influx of migrant workers to the UK over the next four years will be vital to the UK economy.

Figures from economic thinktank the Centre for Economics and Business Research found that legal immigrants entering the country will contribute an estimated £77 billion by 2012.

The study, commissioned by global recruitment consultancy, Harvey Nash, reveals that if the UK did not welcome skilled migrants it would suffer internationally as a competitive nation.

Albert Ellis, chief executive at Harvey Nash, said: "Far from undermining the UK labour market, migration is vital to future economic stability, helping to fill in gaps created by older and under-skilled workforces and make an important economic contribution.

"Businesses need to embrace skilled migration, recruit from wider social groups as well as offer flexible and rewarding workplace practices for homegrown talents, in order to safeguard their long-term and global competitiveness."

Already, 2.5 per cent of the country's workforce is made up of migrant workers with visas from abroad, the majority of whom are based in the education, health and government services sectors. ADNFCR-1494-ID-18520402-ADNFCR
