Text warning to mobile firms
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. Mobile phone companies are being urged to cut the price of sending a text message abroad or risk facing penalties.
Viviane Reding, Europe's top telecoms official, said that unless the industry cuts fees across the board, she will take matters into her own hands.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Ms Reding said that she has set a deadline of July 1st for the European mobile phone sector to act.
"Some [operators] are moving in the right direction," she said.
"Others make announcements and promises. Some have done very concrete things. I will see how the industry goes, not only in promises, but in facts."
She added that firms needed to create "a level playing field" and that "big differences [in price] lead to market distortions."
Millions of text messages will be sent by Britons a abroad this weekend who have jetted off to foreign lands for the Easter break.
Travellers are warned to ensure that they have arranged a deal for cheap international calls or risk paying over the odds.
