Sky Broadband 'closest to delivering promise'
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of cheap broadband deals.Sky Broadband, one of the internet providers offering deals through skinttariffs.com, was rated as the service which gave users the speed closest to the advertised speed.
This follows reports earlier this month ranking Virgin Media, also available through skinttarriffs.com, as the fastest of the big broadband providers.
Researchers at broadband analyst firm Point Topic studied the connections of 4,000 customers with BT, Virgin Media, Carphone Warehouse, Tiscali Orange and Sky.
"There are many variables that affect broadband speeds, distance from the exchange, contention, line quality and so on. It is a challenge to be able to factor all these into a calculation that gives you a reliable idea of the actual speed an individual connection will achieve," said Pamela Varley, research analyst at Point Topic.
Sky was named the ISP which came closest to delivering on its "up to" promises, with Virgin Media in second place.
Meanwhile, scientists at Bangor University are developing a device which they say could make broadband speeds 100 times faster, allowing consumers to download 15 Hollywood films a minute.
The technology is expected to become available in five years.
