T-Mobile and O2 invest in home mobile stations
News brought to you by Skint Tariffs, providers of price comparison for cheap international calls. T-Mobile and O2, both of which offer deals through skinttariffs.com, are investing in developing home based retransmitting technology called femtocells.
Femtocells are indoor base stations, which can be located in a home or a business, and deliver mobile phone services over broadband.
O2 announced at last month's Mobile World Congress that it would be trialling Ubiquisys femtocell technology and now T-Mobile has invested in the same firm, which has also provided femtocells for Nokia Siemens and NEC.
With growing numbers of people using their mobile telephone handsets to access the internet, providers are looking for ways of offering the download speeds people want.
If the trials are successful, consumers could install the small devices in their own homes.
Will Franks, chief technology officer and founder of Ubiquisys told PCWorld: "As we move to future networks, femtocells will play a day one role."
Customers will still be able to make cheap international calls from their mobile phone using an access code once the femtocells are deployed.
