A significant number of mobile phone users in the UK have injured themselves sending text messages while walking along the street, according to a study.
One in ten texters have been hurt bumping into objects while trying to used SMS, which totals 6.6 million accidents, research from 118 118 has revealed.
According to the report, 44 per cent of texters are in favour of padding around lampposts and other items in the street to prevent injury.
Now, Brick Lane in east London has been made a Safe Text street, with padding attached to lampposts.
"The study found Brick Lane was the worst for a combination of reasons," William Ostrom from 118 118 told the Daily Mail.
"It has a very high concentration of lamp posts, signs and bins in a small area. Added to the pedestrian footfall and the number of drinking establishments, it's a hot spot for accidents."
If the Brick Lane scheme is a success, the idea could be implemented in other cities around the country. Skinttariffs supports safe usage of mobile phones and provides more information on the health impacts of mobile phone usage.
