Change in BT pricing policy has helped cheap international calls provider skinttarriffs.com launch free calls using 0870 service.

Following a productive consumer campaign BT has waivered the fee previously charged on non-geographic numbers starting with 0870 and 0845. From January 2009, the 0870 and 0845 numbers have been reduced to zero for many BT customers.

This reduction will benefit subscribers to BT's Anytime package who will get free 0870 and 0845 calls at all times, while Evening and Weekend customers' calls will be free after 6pm Monday-Friday, and all weekend.

The 0870 and 0845 numbers, traditionally used as sales, customer and advice lines have received criticism over the years as been unfair to the consumer. Especially some government bodies such as NHS direct who have used one of these numbers resulting in caller incurring significant costs as they were costing between 6p and 10p per minute.

Some are still charging in excess of 7p per minute so it is advisable to check with your landline service provider.
